Thomas Gibson Fine Art is excited to present these two titans of
Twentieth century art in dialogue with each other.
Both Dubuffet and Chamberlain rejected the traditional notions of
beauty in their work employing instead a more primal aesthetic which
focused on texture and form and demands an immediate reaction
from the viewer.
Dubuffet with his heavily impastoed layers of paint and the use of sand
and stones in the works of his “ Art Brut” period and Chamberlain’s use
of crushed metal creating tactile and textured surfaces.
Both central figures in the post war avant garde artistic movements
Dubuffet was influential to the development of a rebellious “outsider
art” and the profound impact Chamberlain had on American sculpture
and the Abstract Expressionist movement cannot be overstated.
I am deeply indebted to the John Chamberlain Estate, Alexandra
Fairweather and the generous collectors without whom this exhibition
would not be possible.
