Note: This is a portrait of Baron Raoul Barbier, a cavalry
officer who became Mayor of Saigon during the Occupation by the French
forces. He met Renoir at Chatou in the restaurant of Père
Fournaise, and the two were friendly from about 1876 to 1881. Two
other portraits of Barbier are recorded by François Daulte, Auguste
Renoir, vol. I, 1971, no. 243, and no. 379 (seen from the back in the Déjeuner
des Canotiers in the Duncan Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C.)
